What is this article about?

Summer temperatures and long evenings mean grilling season is in full swing! But what can vegans grill? If you want to do without meat, steak & grilled cheese, this article is just right for you. We'll give you tips & recipe inspirations on how you can grill vegan and enjoy your barbecue without meat & dairy products. There are many delicious options, what you can prepare as a vegan*in for the grill and as a side dish - Here should be something for every taste!

Ready made meat substitutes

If you are just switching to a vegan diet and don't want to completely forgo the taste and texture of meat, you can use vegan barbecue substitutes. These are available in most supermarkets in steak, sausage or burger form. Since these grill products are mostly already pre-cooked, they must only briefly on the grill. It is best to coat them with a little oil before preparation so that the crust is nice and crispy and the product does not stick to the grill. So you can enjoy your vegan barbecue alternative after just a few minutes! The downside, however, is that vegan barbecue alternatives are relatively expensive and also not very sustainable, as they cause a lot of packaging waste. Therefore, we show below a few tips on how you can prepare your vegan barbecue alternatives yourself!

Tofu

Tofu is probably the best-known substitute product for the vegan diet, so it must not be missing in this post. Because tofu is anything but boring, it should only be provided with a delicious marinade before grilling. Here you can let your creativity run wild and it offers everything that you like - from salt, pepper, garlic and some paprika powder to soy, teriyaki or BBQ sauce.

After the marinade has absorbed for a few hours, either grill the marinated tofu directly in thick slices or dice the tofu and prepare it together with vegetables as grill skewers. It is best to use firm tofu so that it does not fall apart and squeeze out the excess water before marinating.

Grilled vegetables

Grilled vegetables are THE to-go grilling alternative for vegans, because on the one hand they are inexpensive compared to the meat alternatives from the supermarket and on the other hand you can actually grill any vegetable according to your individual taste! Here's a list of the types of vegetables that do especially well on the grill grate at your next barbecue: Tomatoes, mushrooms, corn, peppers, (sweet) potatoes, eggplant, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke, asparagus, pumpkin, avocado, carrots.

Probably the simplest variant is to grill the vegetables with a marinade. The marinade of oil and aromatic herbs such as rosemary, thyme and oregano ensures that the vegetables become nice and crispy and the flavors can spread. Oils that only burn at high temperatures such as canola oil, olive oil, walnut oil and peanut oil are suitable for the marinade. Fresh herbs should be added to the vegetables toward the end of the grilling process so they don't burn. Also, remember that marinades always need enough time to soak in!

Hard vegetables such as corn on the cob, carrots, squash and potatoes should be precooked before they are marinated and put on the grill to shorten the final cooking time. Firm and large vegetables such as potatoes and mushrooms can also be well stuffed with quinoa, bulgur, chili, lentils or corn and grilled in this form. Vegetables such as eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and peppers only need to be marinated and can be placed directly on the grill without prior cooking time. However, we recommend dabbing very watery vegetables like zucchini before marinating to remove the excess water. This allows the flavor of the marinade to be better absorbed.

Generally, vegetables should be grilled either in grill trays on the grill grate, in large pieces or in the form of grill skewers. Of course, the most practical are the varieties that can be grilled in one piece, such as corn on the cob, potatoes and mushrooms. The cooking time depends on the type as well as the size of the vegetable. Therefore, if you combine different types on a skewer, you should make sure that all vegetables have similar cooking times.

Burger patties

For vegan grilling, burger patties are also a good alternative to meat. You can either buy these ready-made or prepare them yourself. There are now a variety of delicious recipes such as bean or lentil patties. If you want to make the burger patties a little more protein-rich, then simply add a scoop of our Vegan Protein Powder Neutral to the mixture. This also works great with ready-made dry burger mixes that you can buy at the supermarket. In addition, simple slices of smoked tofu or large portobello mushrooms are also great as burger patties - quick to prepare and really tasty!

Bread

Bread should not be missing on any barbecue evening - either as a burger bun or simply as a side dish! To get your protein even when grilling together, we can recommend our organic vegan protein bread baking mix. The bread (which you can also bake in the form of burger buns) is not only quick to prepare and has top nutritional values, but it will also delight your guests with its delicious taste.

If you have a little more time, you can also prepare protein flatbreads and bake them on the grill in less than 10 minutes before your guests - A real highlight!

Side Salads

At a vegan barbecue, side salads should definitely be on the table. Classics such as pasta and potato salad also taste good with vegan mayonnaise or a simple vinegar-oil dressing. In addition, quinoa and couscous salad or a simple leaf and vegetable salad are always good for vegan barbecues - here, too, you can try out according to your mood and taste!

Dips

The vegan barbecue is rounded off with dips. Here vegans have a wide choice. Ketchup and mustard are usually vegan anyway, and hummus, guacamole and salsa also go well with tofu and grilled vegetables. In addition, vegan tzatziki and vegan mayonnaise are easy to make yourself. To surprise your guests with a new dip variant, we have a recipe for a protein-rich bean dip in our repertoire. Simply blend 1 can of kidney beans, 15g Vegan Protein Powder Neutral, 1 clove of garlic, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon tomato paste, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, chili to taste, paprika powder, salt and pepper until you have a bean paste. If necessary, you can add a little water for consistency.

Dessert

Of course, the dessert should not be missing! Try fruit from the grill here - apples, bananas, pineapple and peaches are particularly suitable. Cut the fruit into small pieces, glaze with a little agave syrup and grill in a grill tray for about 5 minutes. In addition, bananas or apples can also be deliciously filled with chocolate and nuts. While the fruit is grilling, quickly prepare a sweet dip from soy yogurt, cocoa powder and our vegan protein powder chocolate and your dessert is ready as a crowning conclusion of the barbecue!
