What is this article about?
Collagen is considered the ideal dietary supplement for athletes, as this miracle powder has many other benefits in addition to factors such as muscle building. What collagen actually is and what advantages this powder has exactly, you can find out in the following blog post.
What is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It comprises about 30 % of the total amount of protein and consists of many essential amino acids.
Collagen is responsible for tightening connective tissue and is an important building block of the body wherever elasticity, firmness and stability play a role: In bones, cartilage, in the skin, in ligaments and vision, in the muscles as well as in the teeth. It is, so to speak, the "glue" that holds our body together.
However, in the ageing process, the body's natural collagen production slows down from young adulthood, which is why collagen should ideally be supplemented.
Collagen
Skin
The skin owes its firmness and elasticity to connective tissue, whose building blocks include collagen and elastin. Collagen is thus one of the main components of our skin and can account for up to 80 percent of it. Our body forms collagen fibres from this collagen protein. These collagen fibres cross-link in the skin and other tissues to form a collagen framework, which gives the skin tension. This means that the higher the collagen content in our skin, the firmer it is.
A high water content and a lot of collagen therefore make young skin look fresh and firm. However, within the natural ageing process, the body's collagen content decreases from the age of 20 and 25 and drops by 1.5 percent annually, especially in the skin. The speed at which this process occurs in each individual and the skin loses its firmness depends on individual genetics.
Bones
Our body produces collagen to keep joints, ligaments and bones stable and flexible. This collagen production is the body's way of preventing joint pain, torn ligaments and bone fractures. If your joints are under a lot of strain from sport or you often have joint pain,
Muscle building
Collagen is also very popular among athletes due to its high protein content. Taking collagen hydrolysate in combination with regular strength training and a protein-rich diet can promote muscle growth.
Hair and nails
Collagen is used to promote hair and nail growth. It also supports the strength and shine of the hair, as hair products such as shampoo only care for the outer layer of the hair, but not the much more important hair structure.
Collagen powder as a dietary supplement
Bovine collagen, i.e. pasture-raised collagen, is produced from the tissue and bones of cows.
There are different types of collagen, the most common being collagen peptides type 1, 2 and 3, which make up just over 80-90% of the body's collagen. Bovine collagen consists of both type 1 and type 3 collagen.
Taking additional collagen hydrolyzate in the form of collagen powder as a dietary supplement also has a positive effect on the body's own collagen production.
Isn't it enough to take in collagen only through various foods?
Eating more collagen-rich foods alone is rather difficult for the average person, as collagen is mainly found in the skin, intestines and bone marrow of animals and these products would have to be consumed in high quantities.
These foods are not necessarily the favourite foods of most people in these required masses, which is why collagen preparations are very well suited to cover one's collagen content sufficiently. Collagen powder can be optimally mixed as a delicious collagen drink in milk or water and can thus be ideally taken with every meal or directly after sport.
Why is collagen powder better than capsules?
Capsules usually need 3-5 minutes until the capsule shell decomposes and the contents are released. The active ingredients can therefore only unfold after a short time. This problem does not occur with powder. By taking the collagen powder with water or milk, the collagen arrives in the stomach after only a few seconds and can be absorbed by the body from that point on.
Furthermore, the capsules must be relatively small so that they can be taken without any problems. For this reason, only a very small amount of powder and thus of active ingredient can be taken in a capsule. Therefore, powder is better suited for the intake of collagen, as about 30 grams of the essential amino acids contained in collagen should be taken per serving.
What is hyaluron?
As already explained above, the skin owes its firmness and elasticity to the connective tissue. Hyaluron or hyaluronic acid is an essential component of the human connective tissue.
Hyaluronic acid can bind a high proportion of moisture - up to 6 litres of water per gram. Hyaluronic acid is therefore jointly responsible for the moisture content of the skin and thus also ensures the firmness of the skin.
Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like fluid produced by our connective tissue cells, in which the developed fibre network of collagen and elastin is embedded. This supports the collagen and elastin fibres, giving the skin additional volume and keeping it smooth and supple.
Hyaluronic acid is also the main component of our joint fluid. Hyaluronic acid lubricates and oils the joints and supports the elasticity and health of tendons, ligaments and cartilage.
However, with age - already from young adulthood - the hyaluronic acid content of the skin and the hyaluronic acid production in the entire body decreases.
This, in combination with the slowed collagen production, means that on the one hand the skin is no longer as elastic, becomes dry, loses volume and wrinkles form. On the other hand, joint problems become more frequent and there is a higher risk of ligament and tendon injuries.
Vegan Collagen - Is there an alternative?
As explained above, collagen is normally derived from animals and is therefore not suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets. In the meantime, however, methods have been developed to produce vegan collagen using genetically modified yeasts and bacteria. The proteins are modified in the laboratory so that they finally have the same structure as the body's own collagen.
But is this artificially produced collagen in vegan form as effective as animal collagen? Since the biological structure of vegan collagen matches that of the body's own collagen, it should be just as effective as its animal counterpart, but research in this area is still in its infancy, which is why this effect cannot yet be sufficiently confirmed.
In addition, this chemically produced vegan collagen is difficult to find on the market nowadays. Many companies therefore sell so-called "collagen boosters" as dietary supplements. These boosters contain vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C and zinc as well as plant extracts and herbs that are supposed to promote the body's own collagen production. Furthermore, vegans can take additional amino acid supplements in order to benefit from the advantages of collagen. The most common amino acids in collagen are glycine, lysine and proline.
However, there are only a few studies that have sufficiently investigated the effect of these food supplements on the body's collagen formation. More research is needed in the future to further optimise collagen for vegetarian and vegan diets and to develop more vegan collagen products.
